Flat lay photography
Flat lay photography is a product photo style where the garment is laid flat on a clean surface and shot directly from above, showing the garment shape and design without a model or mannequin.
Flat lay is the cheapest and fastest form of apparel photography. You need a flat surface, soft overhead lighting, and a camera. Most brands shoot flat lay first for catalog uploads, then add ghost mannequin or on-model imagery later.
Flat lay images are not ideal for conversion — customers cannot see fit, drape, or how the garment moves. They work as a fallback or as the first step in an AI workflow that converts the flat lay into on-model imagery.
Many AI fashion platforms accept flat lay as input and generate ghost mannequin or on-model output. This is the fastest path from a sample to PDP-ready imagery.
